Researching the Bogeyman for a pitch, I find that there are similar characters throughout the world. Each country has their own version of this ill-defined ghoul, but the gist seems to be he’s called upon by parents in the middle of the night to punish children when they misbehave. Some cultures suggest he eats them, others portray him as scooping the poor kids up in a sack and either selling them or simply carrying them off for undefined nefarious purposes. Most countries describe a creature with generally the same behavior and similar characteristics.
With the notable exception of Hungary. In Hungary, the Bogeyman is known as MUMUS and he partners with the REZFESKU BAGOLY to kidnap mischevious children.
And who is this mysterious REZFESKU BAGOLY with which the Bogeyman pals around? Why, it’s no other than the
COPPER PENIS OWL!
That’s the literal translation of the phrase. You may find a lovely carving of this mythical creature here.
In Hungry, parents tell their children that if they’re not good, an OWL WITH A GIANT COPPER PENIS is going to fly in to their bedroom along with a man carrying a giant sack.
I am now going to research rates of juvenile delinquency in Hungary. I expect to find them extremely low, bordering on nonexistent.
