She calls him a homosexual and Stephen calls her a bitch. He then races back into the house and grabs the stuffed dog Irene sleeps with, which he had recently hidden from her.

I’m going to be honest, I kept trying to write an introductory paragraph that segues into what follows here in a soothing, pleasant, and friendly way. I can’t do it. I can’t stifle the way I feel about this situation, and there’s no way around it; short film-making as a hobby, profession, and artistic pursuit is plagued by thousands of awful short films.

I can’t do it. I can’t stifle the way I feel about this situation, and there’s no way around it; directors’ manifesto writing as a hobby, profession, and angry pursuit is plagued by thousands of awful manifestos.

Forgive me for being flip; but really Peter, come on. You’re shooting fish in a barrel. You attend what you yourself identify as a pay-to-play short “film” festival and then rant about how some shots were out of focus?

You are fortunate to have access to boom mics. Most don’t. You are fortunate to have access to a camera that allows you to manually focus the lens. Many don’t. Your rant reminds me of curmudgeonly old 35mm purists who go out of their way to spank anything shot on a video camera. You’re being a format snob; you’re just doing it at a more subtle level.

“It’s hard to make a serious short film so you should probably avoid it” - I don’t know where to begin with this. This entire paragraph is a tired rehash of the same anti-pretension/anti-intellectual rant that’s been tossed around by kids wearing nerdy t-shirts in the back row of film classes for years. Why on earth shouldn’t someone attempt to tell a serious story? For fear that it will be bad? For fear that it will be pretentious? If a young female filmmaker has the guts to make a film about her anorexia, who are you to tell her she’s a walking cliche and her subject matter is tired? I personally tend to think there is nothing more tired and cliche than mediocre genre satire; and yet I wouldn’t dare to tell someone they shouldn’t give it their best shot, if that’s what they felt driven to do. Honestly though, the thing that irks me the most about this paragraph is the notion that because it’s hard you should probably avoid it. Cue Seth and Amy: Really, Peter? You, who handily managed to make THE RIG, an entire feature film, shot on location and finished with a full orchestral score, all on a budget of what I’m guessing is the cost of a decent house in LA? You who have accomplished so much at such a young age? You are going to be the one to tell people not to try something they feel compelled to do, simply because it’s “hard”?

Kids - ignore this manifes”not”to. The consumer digital revolution isn’t about the ability to create a plethora of nice looking comic shorts. It’s about the sudden potential for anyone, anywhere, trained or untrained, aware of cinematic cliches or unaware, to tell a funny or serious or scary (or all of these things!) story in a way that they couldn’t possibly afford to do only five years ago. If the result of that story is a couple of laughs from friends, a web series, a studio deal and an Oscar, or just some goddamn life skills - great. Mission accomplished. Go for it.

Love you, Peter.

Average Saturday afternoon on the beach at the Salton Sea, or...

Average Saturday afternoon on the beach at the Salton Sea, or publicity still from post-apocalyptic drama THE ROAD?

Salvation Mountain, Slab City, near Niland, CA.

Salvation Mountain, Slab City, near Niland, CA.

The primordial soup in the gift shop was overpriced, in my...

The primordial soup in the gift shop was overpriced, in my opinion.

Ground view of this dinosaur’s neck reveals a very...

Ground view of this dinosaur’s neck reveals a very unfortunate resemblance.

Took a long, strange trip out to the desert yesterday with some...

Took a long, strange trip out to the desert yesterday with some friends.
